Karbon customers Alisha and Peter are celebrating taking the next rung of the property ladder, after successfully purchasing a 65% share of their home in Thornaby.
The couple have made the move from the Rent to Buy scheme to Shared Ownership and have expressed their gratitude to the ownership scheme and Karbon Homes for making home ownership a reality.
Alisha and Peter said: “Being able to break down the home buying process into affordable stages has been life changing for us.
“When we first viewed the house we were instantly drawn to it. The Rent to Buy scheme provided us with a sense of security that the private rental market had never offered, and even though we’d never considered the prospect of owning our own home the scheme made it seem like it could soon be a reality.
“It also gave us a ‘try before you buy', as we were under no obligation to commit to buying if the house didn’t end up being right for us.”
The couple moved into their home back in May 2020 and after six months they knew they wanted to go ahead with buying a share. With rents set at 20% less than local market rent through the rent to buy scheme, the couple were able to put money aside for a deposit.
They added: “Without the Rent to Buy scheme it would have been incredibly difficult for us to buy a home, as the reduced rent allowed us to save for the deposit.
We’ve had a really positive experience and would fully recommend other people to try Rent to Buy and Shared Ownership, especially couples and families.”
Through Shared Ownership, the couple have a mortgage on the share of their home they own and pay rent to Karbon on the remaining share.
They are planning to staircase up to 100% within the next couple of years.
Jill Robinson, Head of Sales and Marketing at Karbon Homes, said: “Affordable home ownership schemes have been extremely popular amongst customers, many of whom tell us that taking those first steps on the property ladder wouldn’t have been possible without it.
“It’s fantastic to hear stories like Alisha and Peter’s, where these schemes have given them the means to save for a deposit and buy a share of their home.
"Especially now, at a time where house prices and mortgage rates are rising, first-time buyers can benefit hugely from what the scheme offers, and it’s great to hear just what a difference our homes can make.”
