Ann and Mel Playford, who live at Moordale Court in Middlesbrough, celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday 10 August.
They enjoyed a get together with their friends from Moordale Court, which included coffee and some delicious looking cakes, before heading out on a lunch date for just the two of them.
When asked how it feels to be celebrating 60 years of marriages, Ann and Mel jokingly replied:
“Quite shocking. We never thought we’d get here.”
Ann and Mel were working in North Ormesby Hospital when they both met.
“We would see each other everyday and then we just started going out along with some friends of ours.”
They were married on 10 August 1963 and started a family together. Mel worked for British Steel for 19 years and then worked for Middlesbrough County Council for 10 years. Ann worked for a special needs school for 14 years once their children were a bit older.
They were the first residents at Moordale Court, moving in when the building opened 12 years ago. Ann was the chair of the committee at Moordale Court as well and helped to raise money with their weekly coffee mornings and events. This went towards funding trips out, entertainments and celebrations for the residents.
“This is a lovely place. The people are very welcoming and we’ve had lots and lots of get togethers. We celebrated our Golden wedding anniversary here as well which was a massive celebration.
“There’s a good sense of friendship here. You can knock on anybody’s door and they’d help you, that’s the kind of place it is.”
When asked about the secret to a successful marriage, they said:
“Have a good sense of humour and talk to each other. If you don’t talk to each other you're not going to solve problems.”
Scheme Coordinator Lesley Duggan was so grateful that we could be part of their celebrations:
“It’s a wonderful occasion. They’ve been really lovely sharing it with everyone else in the scheme. A lot of the residents have been sharing stories of their own marriages and memories of their partners. I think coming together and celebrating Ann and Mel’s marriage is a lovely thing and something everyone can participate in.”
“I’ve known Ann and Mel for three years. They’re very proud of the building and they want to maintain it. They’re very active people and it’s a pleasure to have them here, they really participate and they’re very good advocates for residents who can’t speak for themselves.
“It’s a privilege that they want us to be part of the occasion and it makes us feel like we’re part of their family.
A huge congratulations to Ann and Mel from everyone here at Karbon Homes.
