Every year police receive hundreds of calls from residents relating to anti-social behaviour, Halloween is a peak period and we hope by offering some simple advice you can enjoy your Halloween without causing any upset or becoming a victim of anti-social behaviour yourself.
Keeping your children safe
- If your children want to go out trick or treating, always make sure they have a responsible adult accompanying them.
- Be respectful in areas where elderly people live; some may not want people knocking on their doors after dark, respect any signs on doors which may say “No cold callers or sales”.
- Stay safe near roadways, try and wear some bright clothing or carry a torch.
- If your group receive any unnecessary abuse, please walk away. If you need to please contact the police on 101 to make them aware of the matter.
Keeping your home safe
- Halloween can be great fun, particularly for children, if you would rather not be disturbed please display an appropriate sign to advise for example “No cold callers, no trick or treaters. Thank you”.
- If young children knock at your door and are not supervised by an appropriate adult, please make a judgement call as to whether it is appropriate to hand out sweets/money.
- If you are receiving abuse from trick or treaters then please call 101 to report the matter to the police.
