The Chester-le-Street-based cricket foundation have been helping to deliver Karbon’s Active Ageing Programme at five of our schemes in County Durham since September 2021.
As we all know, activity and exercise are vital components of a healthy lifestyle and are just as important for people aged 55 and over as they are for anyone else.
This is what the Active Ageing Programme sets out to achieve; to provide fun, safe and engaging movement-based activities to customers at our retirement living schemes to get them active, feeling healthy and getting to know each other. And of course, it goes without saying that at the Durham County Cricket Foundation a lot of these activities are bat and ball-themed!
Besides cricket, a big part of the programme is the use arts and crafts to promote focus and a sense of achievement in the residents. Durham Cricket’s Foundation Development Officer Angela Sheridan expands on this:
“Using Craft as a basis for the residents of Karbon Homes, Durham Cricket Foundation have both educated and enriched the lives of those residents we see.
Through various projects and different skill sets, we meet regularly to improve the wellbeing of the people who attend. Helping both mindset and dexterity as well as channeling creativity, we have seen the residents blossom and grow in confidence and ability in each session.
We value our partnership and continuously look forward to meeting the residents of Karbon Homes.”

As mentioned, the initiative first came to fruition back in 2021. This was after £18,000 of investment, paid for through our community grants fund. At the time, this was seen as the perfect way to encourage customers of the schemes ease back into more social, active lifestyles following the coronavirus pandemic.
The cricket-based activities on offer include seated cricket, a table-tennis-cricket-hybrid known as table cricket, keep-fit cricket and a collection of batting, bowling and fielding games affectionately known as the cricket olympics.
As well as this, we have Karbon competition days where participants will travel to different courts to play various cricket games against each other.
Karbon Homes Community Investment Manager Paul Moralee had this to say:
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Durham Cricket Foundation through the Active Ageing Programme. It was great to see the impact the programme has had on participants and we are looking forwards to continue to deliver for our customers.
The programme is part of a range of activities we have been running for older residents and promotes fun ways of staying active as people get older.”
The Durham County Cricket Foundation will look to work with a total of five Karbon Homes schemes across the County Durham district, with additional sessions available for other groups outside of schemes on a case by case basis.
Up to 100 sessions will be delivered either at schemes or elsewhere in total over the course of the project.
Barry McGeachy, Foundation Development Officer at Durham Cricket, reflected on the benefits of the Cricket itself:
"Bringing the joy and camaraderie of cricket to the residents of Karbon Care homes is a testament to the transformative power of sport.
Through this partnership with Karbon Homes, Durham Cricket Foundation embraces the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of those in our community. By fostering a sense of connection, promoting physical activity, and creating lasting memories, cricket becomes a catalyst for improved well-being and social interaction.
We deeply value our partnership with Karbon Homes, as together, we strive to champion inclusivity, happiness, and the spirit of cricket in the lives of residents, bringing brighter days and cherished moments."
