Community clean ups in full swing across North Durham

Karbon’s Community Connectors have teamed up with local partners to bring a number of community action days to neighbourhoods across North Durham this summer.

Armed with litter pickers and PPE, the team, accompanied by local residents and community partners, such as councillors, MPs and neighbourhood police teams, have taken to the streets and local parks to get neighbourhoods looking tidy.

Karbon also provided skips at a number of the events, to dispose of the rubbish and for local residents to clear items that had been difficult to dispose of over the recent months.

To date, community action days have happened at Bournmoor, Great Lumley and most recently at two estates in Consett.

The latest took place at Moorside, in South Consett, where Karbon was joined by Cllr Dominic Haney, Cllr Mark Wilkes and the Consett Neighbourhood Police team.

Jess Wray, Karbon’s Community Connector for the Consett, said: “It’s been fantastic to get back out into our communities this Summer and once again engage with our residents to help keep neighbourhoods looking their best.

“The recent action days in Consett were a great example of community partners coming together to make a difference and feedback from residents has been really positive. We managed to fill a good number of rubbish bags with litter and was lovely to see residents of all ages getting involved with helping.”

As well as the litter pick itself, residents could meet at a central information point to chat to Karbon housing officers about their homes and neighbourhoods, and to the partners about other community issues or concerns.

Cllr Dominic Haney added: “I was delighted to once again meet with local people in the heart of our communities, listening to their concerns to make positive changes.

“We will be planning more events like this in the future and I hope to see many residents there. By working together we can really make a difference”.
