Children and young people from West Northumberland are benefitting from free summer holiday activities thanks to funding from the Department for Education’s Holiday Activities and Food programme.
Holiday Squad is a partnership between Karbon Homes, Northumberland County Council, Leading Link, Northumberland Communities Together, Tanga Club and The Miners Lamp Café and Community Hub. It provides a variety of free fun summer activities with healthy food for children and young people in West Northumberland.
Holiday Squad will be supporting local community venues and groups with activities including creative art classes with ARTventurers, outdoor fun with Forest School, a chance to learn to cook with Creative Kitchen and a holiday football camp with Apex Football Coaching.
Food for the activities is being provided by two local charities, the Miners Lamp Café and Community Hub and The Hextol Foundation.
Philip Pollard, Karbon Homes’ Assistant Director of Customer and Community Engagement, said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Northumberland County Council and Leading Link to bring our Holiday Squad activities to West Northumberland.
“With the cost of living increasing it is fantastic to be able to put on free engaging summer activities, enabling us to work with local activity groups to provide an opportunity for children to mix and socialise with others during the holidays and enjoy great, healthy lunches and snacks.”
Guy Renner-Thompson, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Northumberland County Council, said: “Making sure our young people have the best start in life is a top priority for the council.
“We know that many of our residents are facing financial uncertainty as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic along with the current cost of living circumstances and the council is doing all that we can to provide support to those who need it.
“We couldn’t do this without all our fantastic partners in the community and well done to all involved for putting together this brilliant programme of locally-led enrichment activities for our young people to enjoy.”
