A 17 year old from Stanley has started a new job at a local children’s charity that she has been visiting for almost 11 years thanks in part to a Karbon Homes funded programme.
Jessica first started going to The Activity Den in Stanley in 2014 after she had just turned six years old. Now, a couple of months away from her 17th birthday, she’s about to start a new job there as Den Assistant.
Jessica was part of the Young Volunteers Task Force, a group set up by the Activity Den and first funded by Karbon in 2022. The task force gives anyone aged 13+ the opportunity to plan, organise and carry out a range of projects and events that will benefit the community, building friendships and developing important life skills along the way.
Jessica is so grateful for the support that the task force gave her:
“Being part of the Young Volunteers Task Force has helped me to develop my skills. From being a severely anxious, quiet young girl to being confident enough to be part of and lead a team. I have had incredible opportunities to grow my skill set and bond with my fellow volunteers.
“I know I am not the only person that has been impacted by the Task Force. I have watched other young people become young volunteers and have also undergone the same experiences as me, growing their skills whilst having fun and bonding with people their age.
“Some of the experiences and courses I have had the opportunity to do as part of the Young Volunteers Task Force includes an Introduction to Youth Work course, a first aid course and several group experiences which helped to develop everyone’s teamwork skills.
“As volunteers, we all have vastly different views for our future. From pilot to teacher, all of us want to do something different with our lives, but the one common idea between them is how we are slightly closer to achieving these dreams due to the support of the Young Volunteer’s Task Force. So many of our skills have grown and now we all feel confident that we are one step closer to reaching what we want in life.”
The Activity Den is a charity that works hard to improve the lives of children and young people by running projects, youth clubs and activities in Stanley and the surrounding areas.
The Activity Den's Acting Youth Project Lead, Steph Rudd said:
“We’re so pleased that the Young Volunteers Task Force has helped Jessica to develop her skills and confidence and we’re over the moon that she’s now going to be working with us.
“It’s incredible to see someone grow up into a confident and ambitious person before your eyes. We know Jessica is going to be fantastic and can’t wait to see what it leads to for her.”
The Young Volunteers Task Force was funded by Karbon Homes through our Community Investment Fund. The grants aim to support projects that make a real difference to people’s lives and wellbeing within the communities in which we work.
