For the second year in a row we are financially supporting Chester-le-Street based charity, Wheels 2 Work County Durham.
A £4,000 grant from Karbon’s Community Investment fund is enabling the charity to loan 12 County Durham residents a scooter to get them to and from work and subsidise the hire fee so they can save for their own vehicle.
Karbon customer Dougie benefitted from the support of Wheels 2 Work and received a guaranteed six months of access to a scooter for his journeys to and from work. Once he completed his loan period, this enabled Dougie to buy one of the older scooters from the scheme.
Highly recommending the scheme to others, Dougie said: "I mainly work in warehousing and these jobs are often located on industrial estates. Trying to get there by bus can be difficult and having to rely on lifts is inconvenient.
“Hiring the scooter from Wheels 2 Work gave me control over my own travel and I could plan my own journeys. I knew I would be at work on time and could work extra hours when offered.
“The process of getting the scooter was simple and the Wheels 2 Work staff are very helpful.”
Following the success of its first partnership with Wheels 2 Work, this year we have increased our support to help more residents, like Dougie, across County Durham.
Liam Weatherill, Manager of Wheels 2 Work County Durham shares: “Our range of schemes can help residents access work, education and volunteering opportunities.
“Having the support of Karbon makes our work so much easier to support people financially in these difficult times and contributes to the income we need to deliver our charitable activities.”
The charity covers any additional costs including Compulsory Basic Training, insurance, servicing and riding accessories, leaving riders only responsible for their weekly hire payment and petrol. Bicycles are also available for hire at a reduced rate too.
Paul Hadden, Karbon’s Community Connector for the Durham area, is highly aware of how a lack of public transport is a significant barrier to those trying to access employment.
Paul explained: "Commuting is often a real hurdle our customers tenants need to overcome to get into work. Factors such as limited transport routes in certain areas and the length of time it takes for multiple bus connections, all contribute to reasons why people can’t attend interviews and sustain jobs."
