Funding secured for next large scale retrofit project

Great news! We’ve been successful in our bid to the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF) Wave 2 and have been awarded a grant of over £580,000.

Add this to the money we already have earmarked for retrofit work over the next 2 years, and we’ll be investing £3.6m in improving the energy efficiency of 218 homes in Northumberland and County Durham.

These homes, which are some of our lowest performing when it comes to energy efficiency, will benefit from a mix of external wall insulation, underfloor insulation, cavity wall insulation and loft insultation top-ups. Some will also be fitted with Solar PV panels.

Anthony Bell, Assistant Director of Asset Management and Regeneration at Karbon Homes, said: “It’s fantastic news to hear we’ve been successful in the second wave of the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund. In the UK, where homes account for around 40% of the emissions the country produces, this vital funding will enable us, and other registered providers across the country, to make real progress in retrofitting and decarbonising our homes.

“Not only will this funding help us lower the carbon footprint of our homes, but it’ll help us ensure our homes are more efficient and affordable for the customers living in them. As the cost of living crisis continues to have an impact, and we look for more ways to help customers financially, this work has never been more important.”

This upcoming project contributes towards a wider, £80m retrofit investment across the North East and Yorkshire, delivered by a consortium of 18 housing associations, councils and ALMOs in the region and led by the North East and Yorkshire Net Zero Hub.

The full project will see energy efficiency investments made to 5,525 homes across the region, supported by a £32.4 million SHDF grant from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

This round of funding follows on from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund Wave 1, which supported our current large scale retrofit project of 97 homes in the villages of Ouston, County Durham and Otterburn in Northumberland.

This project, alongside other elements of our 'Response to Climate Change', have been shortlisted for two awards

Northern Housing Awards – Best Retrofit Initiative
