A life saving defibrillator has been installed at Moordale Court in Middlesbrough, for the local community to use should they need it.
The installation was made possible thanks to the tireless fundraising efforts of Moordale Court residents, Clare, Brenda and Ivy, who have organised weekly breakfast clubs, a festive bazaar, a curry night with games, and a Christmas meal to raise money.
When asked how she felt about achieving the fundraising target for the equipment, Clare said “We did it. There are so many people to thank for making this possible. We are very pleased that the defibrillator is up and running for everyone to use.”
The residents also received support from Grangetown ward councillor, Cllr Adam Brook, who helped them obtain the lifesaving equipment.
Councillor Brook said: “I’m proud to have worked alongside the residents of Moordale Court in their fundraising efforts and campaign for a publicly accessible defibrillator. It has been a rewarding experience to support their initiative, which has resulted in the third defibrillator for our ward - a much-needed addition to our community's safety resources.”
“Their fundraising, paired with funds secured from the North East Ambulance Service, has brought this project to fruition in such a short period of time. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Clare, Brenda and Ivy and the residents of Moordale Court, for their unwavering commitment to this cause. I look forward to continuing our partnership and working together on future projects that will benefit our community.”
A defibrillator can be used to help someone suffering cardiac arrest – that is when the heart malfunctions and suddenly stops beating unexpectedly.
The unit, which has been installed to the outside of the building and is clearly visible from the main road, is available for the whole community to use in case of an emergency.
The defibrillator has been registered with the local ambulance service and we delivered an awareness session for our residents, with guidance on how to use the equipment safely.
Karbon’s Health and Safety Coordinator Chris Smith, who ran the session with residents, said: “A defibrillator can be the difference between life and death for some people. Let’s hope it never gets used but the local community can rest assured that should they ever need to access one, this one is available for everybody to use.”
“A person’s chance of survival decreases by around 10% for every minute where defibrillation is delayed. Unfortunately, CPR alone is not enough and it’s vital that a defibrillator is on a person’s chest within minutes to give them a fighting chance.
“In the UK alone, there are over 30,000 sudden cardiac arrests annually so it's important to be able to recognise early signs and then know how to use a defibrillator.”
