Give your garden an end of summer clean

As we prepare for the sun to set on summer and for autumn to breeze in, now is the best time to get those end of summer tasks taken care of, including making sure your garden is tidy and clear of rubbish.

Our Community Safety Team is encouraging customers to give their gardens and yards a good end of summer clean.

As a customer, you are responsible for keeping your garden or yard safe and tidy. This means that grassed areas should be regularly cut, weeds cleared and any litter or rubbish - particularly bulky items - should be removed.

Community Safety Manager, Laurie Edmundson, said: “We want customers to really feel that their house is their home and part of that involves taking responsibility for maintaining their gardens to an acceptable standard.

“Although it’s sometimes difficult to keep on top of garden maintenance, once the site is at a decent standard it is easier to maintain.

“Garden areas can’t be allowed to become eyesores and, although we appreciate that it may cost to have bulky items - like old fridges and sofas - removed, these can’t be left dumped in gardens.

“Customers must ensure their garden areas are safe and kept tidy and clear of rubbish.”

If an individual garden area isn’t maintained customers will receive a letter asking them to take action. Failure to do so could be viewed as a breach of your tenancy agreement.

In some instances, we may need to work with the relevant local authority to issue a community protection notice that would require you to clean your garden or yard area or risk receiving a fine.

We always look to use this as a last resort and usually we can work together to ensure that outdoor areas remain safe and tidy.

If you need any help or support with cleaning your garden and yard, please call us on 0808 164 0111 and ask to speak to your Housing Officer. To find out more about the removal of bulky waste, please contact your local authority.
