Grants fund launched to help communities stay connected

A new, £80,000 fund has been launched to support community projects in Haltwhistle and its surrounding parishes.

The fund is awarding grants to local groups, charities or individuals in the area to support the delivery of either new or existing projects that have a significant impact on the community.

The fund is a result of a partnership between Haltwhistle Community Partnership and Karbon Homes and was originally intended to launch the fund in 2020 but this was delayed due to the pandemic.

Julie Gibbons, Chair for the Haltwhistle Community Partnership, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Karbon Homes for generously donating this special fund to our community and helping us invest in projects that will make a tangible difference to local residents.

“We welcome ideas from individuals, small groups or existing organisations and are here to chat through ideas and assist with project delivery.”

The community fund was launched in response to a community consultation carried out by Karbon Homes prior to the pandemic. The consultation helped determine a number of criteria for the fund, which projects need to meet to qualify for support.

These include projects that promote positive health and wellbeing, those that facilitate activities for young people, as well as initiatives that promote civic pride, improve local facilities and look to create small scale enterprise in the area.

Paul Moralee, Community Investment Manager for Karbon Homes said: “One of our key aims at Karbon is to shape strong, sustainable places and we’re passionate about helping our communities to thrive. The past 12 months has shown how much of a difference strong communities make to the wellbeing of residents and investing in them is more important than ever.

“Our Community Connectors covering West Northumberland have worked with the Haltwhistle Community Partnership on a number of successful projects in the past and with the knowledge and expertise of the team there, it was the obvious choice for this fund to be a joint venture, led by the community, for the community.”

The fund is being administered by the Haltwhistle Partnership, which has set up a steering group, made up of local residents, to encourage applications and support the funding and delivery of projects in the community. It is hoped that the projects developed will have a sustainable element that will ensure the fund has a lasting effect.

Those interested in applying can either visit Karbon Homes' website, www.karbonhomes.co.uk/haltwhistle, or contact the Haltwhistle Community Partnership, email chairman@haltwhistle.org or phone 01434 321242 .
