Share your thoughts on our plans to bring a new, cutting-edge Extra Care scheme to South Shields.
Working closely with South Tyneside Council, Karbon Homes is submitting a planning application to bring a 121 home scheme to a site on Benton Road, on the former site of the Chuter Ede school and community association.
The homes will consist of a mix of one and two bed apartments, offering housing and care to people of varying ages with additional support needs. A number of the apartments will be designed specifically for people living with dementia.
The scheme will have an integrated community hub, alongside a bistro café and multi-use spaces for activities which will be open to the general public and community groups, helping to facilitate community cohesion.
If approved the scheme will help to address the lack of specialist affordable accommodation options in the area.

All the feedback received will be shared with the design team and used to help shape the scheme, where appropriate, ahead of them submitting the application. We welcome your comments relating to the new homes themselves, as well as the schemes design, layout, access, landscaping and community offer.

Additional information on the proposed scheme
- 121 homes, made up of 11 two-bed apartments and 110 one-bed apartments
- 19 of these one-bed apartments will be specially designed for residents with dementia, with secure access and egress systems for security
- An integrated community hub, open to the general public and community groups
- An accessible bistro/café on the ground floor of the scheme, which will be open to the general public
- Multi-use spaces for activities, which will be available for use by the general public
The scheme forms part of the Council’s wider Adult Social Care Accommodation Strategy aimed at supporting people who may need care and support to live independently in the community.
This is in line with the Council’s ambition to help people stay well and healthy throughout their lives and is in direct response to feedback from residents who said they would prefer to live well independently, rather than go into residential care.
