As part of National Careers Week, Graeme Welsh, our Employment Foundations Advisor, looked to provide career inspiration of students at Newcastle College with a series of employer presentations.
The presentations included Alasdair Hill from Robertson’s, Bruce Ogilvie from Fire Protection, Sim Kaur from SKR Beauty, Joanna Sam from First Network as well as Graeme, Claire Lindsay and Kate Hedley from our Foundations for Life Team and Jo Hamilton, our Director of ICT and Digital Transformation.
Graeme said “National Careers Week is a great way for young people to find out more about potential career opportunities and get excited about what their future holds. These presentations give them a chance to hear directly from local employers, discover opportunities they may not have considered and the diversity of roles available. We’re also showing how they could take the steps to starting their career journey with us.”
The presentations included an overview of the organisation, the roles available and advice on what these organisations are looking for when they interview potential candidates.
Harvey, an automotive student at Newcastle College found the presentations useful “It good to know what to expect from the interview process and how you can prepare.”
Victor, a mechanical engineering student, agreed “I liked finding out about the range of opportunities available as well as the questions you could ask the employers when you’re doing your interview.”
Joe Adams, Curriculum lead in Foundation Learning at Newcastle College, who lead on the National Careers Week activities at the college, said:
“We’re so grateful to Graeme and all the employers who’ve taken the time out to take part in these presentations. It can make such a big difference for students to hear directly from employers and find out more about the opportunities that are out there, as well as the best way for them to get their foot in the door. We hope it inspires their future careers and that they may even get roles with these employers in the future.”
