Congratulations to Karbon customers John and Doreen Palmer who celebrated 70 years of marriage with their Platinum wedding anniversary in September.
John and Doreen who live on the estate of Crossfields, Middlesbrough, celebrated this special anniversary with a party at the local Karbon Community Centre, organised by close neighbour and community star June Townson. Joined by family, friends and neighbours, John and Doreen were over the moon with the celebration and had a lovely time.
John and Doreen used to go dancing at St Barnabas Church Hall in Middlesbrough and this is where their journey began.
John said "Doreen caught my eye and we swept each other off our feet, dancing.
"I had to fight of all the blokes to get Doreen"
They were courting for about three years and were then married on 19th September 1953.
When asked what their secret was to a long marriage was, John jokingly said, “Give into everything, do as your told and invest in some earplugs.”
On a more serious note, John said "The secret to a good marriage was all in the lyrics to the song “Make Someone Happy” by Jimmy Durante. I sang this song to Doreen often. The song lyrics are so important and that’s how we've lasted so long."
Doreen said "I don't know how we've have lasted so long, we are like chalk and cheese.
"We've stuck together and looked after one another all through life and it has been about giving and taking over the years.
"We've had a wonderful life together and have had some amazing holidays all over the world."
John and Doreen have three children together and six grandchildren and now great grandchildren.
They were also delighted to receive a card from the King to mark their huge celebration.
A huge congratulations to John and Doreen from everyone here at Karbon Homes.
