As part of its commitment to community investment, Karbon Homes has been able to help St Cuthbert’s Hospice in delivering services that meet the needs of people living with life limiting conditions.
Through this current project, Karbon Homes has provided venues for a range of community support sessions and events in the Chester-le-Street area.
The ‘Hospice Hub’, a drop in style coffee morning was launched in February at the Parish Centre, Middle Chare, Chester-le-Street. The coffee morning has given people who might feel nervous about coming out on their own the confidence to attend, knowing that Hospice Staff and volunteers would be available to chat and offer support.
The weekly event provides access to a range of support options within the community such as Age UK, local authority welfare rights teams and carer support. Open to anyone, the event allows the wider community to access support or just join for a chat.
Following the success of the coffee mornings, Karbon Homes has provided the use of community rooms at Auckland Close in Chester-le-Street, and Lambourne Close in Bournmoor to facilitate St Cuthbert’s Hospice to provide accessible community-based support.
Currently, a weekly Dementia Support group is held at Auckland and is supported by the Hospices Admiral Nurse and Dementia Team. The group provides a supportive and relaxing environment for people living with dementia and their carers to socialise, participate in enjoyable activities, access information, advice and share their experiences with others who may be experiencing similar situations.
Karbon Community Connector, Paul Hadden, said: “The services and support from St Cuthberts Hospice have proved vital for many members of the community.
“We’re honoured to be able to provide the spaces for the groups and hope that the support can continue well into the future, meaning even more of our surrounding communities can benefit from the fantastic work St Cuthberts Hospice carry out.”
Through these events and sessions, St Cuthberts’ Hospice Community Outreach Team have successfully been able to support and refer people for help including additional carer support, benefits checks and support to access physical activities. They also offer specialist input from the Hospice’s Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Dementia Specialist team including an Admiral Nurse to best support individual needs.
Louise Johnson, Community Outreach Manager, said: “St Cuthbert’s Hospice and Karbon Homes have a long history of working in partnership and we are always very grateful of the support we receive.
"It makes all the difference to the sustainability of our outreach activities and for us, this means we can establish a presence in the heart of the community, enabling Karbon Homes tenants to access hospice support in their local neighbourhood."
Whether you need advice and support or just want to chat, you can join the Hospice Hub Coffee Morning for an informal cuppa and an initial chat. Mondays, 10am – 11:30am, Chester-le-Street Parish Centre, Church Chare, DH3 3QB.
