Food Nation, an award-winning food focused social enterprise, have created a mouth-wateringly good Recipe Kit project to help households to cook delicious, healthy and affordable meals throughout the year.
Thanks in part to funding from Karbon Homes, for the past 10 months Food Nation has been sending a weekly delivery of food to match recipe cards and online recipe tutorials that allow a household to cook from scratch.
The project has had a hugely positive impact, helping to support households in the short term who are facing difficulties as a result of COVID-19. It has increased skills and confidence to cook from scratch, and the kits are empowering people to make good food choices both now and in the future.
Each weekly recipe kit features well-balanced and nutritious meals alongside low-cost ingredients. They give the opportunity for households to cook together, getting children, young people and adults stuck in and enjoy creating their meals.
Joanna Lacey, Director and Head of Social Delivery at Food Nation, said: “We are thrilled that Karbon Homes has provided funding to help support the Recipe Kit project and introduce this great healthy cooking programme to their residents.
“We are passionate about working in the most disadvantaged communities. We are always looking for ways to connect with a wider audience who may need support with food access and who are ready to improve their shopping, cooking and eating habits long term when faced with challenging budgets or a lack of confidence.
“Karbon Homes’ support will help us with the ongoing development of digital recipe tutorials and create the resources that enable the project to take place and reach the people who need it the most.”
The project has already benefited households living within the more disadvantaged circumstances in Newcastle.
Each week, Food Nation provides 130 free Recipe Kits (equivalent to 520 meals) to approximately 65 households. They have also set up community distribution hubs with partner organisations able to identify people in need and distribute kits through their own services.
The service has had a hugely positive response from households, with many stating that the Recipe Kits increase their access to fresh food, whilst also allowing them to think more creatively about how to use typical items provided in food parcels.
Laura, a mum of two from Byker who uses the recipe kits, said:
“Since using Food Nation, I’ve gone from buying frozen meals to having a fridge that’s full of green and colourful ingredients. It’s a massive change for us.
“We get the recipe kits weekly. Our son loves it. It’s something our whole family can do. The recipes are very adaptable, so you can change your ingredients to suit your tastes. It’s so easy.”
