Make sure you claim your £150 council tax rebate

What is the council tax rebate?

In April, the government introduced a support package worth over £22 billion in 2022-2023 to help with the increase in energy costs. This means that all households in council tax bands A-D, which they live in as their main home, will be entitled to a £150 tax rebate.

The £150 rebate will be provided as a separate payment, rather than as part of your council tax bill and you are not required to pay this back.

How do I claim for my rebate?

If you live in an eligible property and you already pay your council tax by Direct Debit, your local authority will make the payment directly into your bank account. Some of these payments should have already started to be processed.

If you don’t pay your council tax by direct debit, you'll need to apply for the rebate and the closing dates for applications vary depending on each local authority, some have closed already!

Your Local Authority should have written to you telling you what to do – please don’t ignore this letter!

In most cases, you’ll need to provide a council tax reference number, which should be on the letter they send to you. You will be required to provide bank account details via a secure form so they can make this payment to you. Important – your local authority will never request your bank details for this payment by telephone.

What if I don’t have a bank account?

Customers who can’t provide bank details will either get a voucher or a credit to their council tax account. Again, this varies depending on each local authority.
