Net Zero Week: Home Improvements

From wall, floor and loft insulation to photovoltaic solar panels and air source heat pumps, the energy saving measures we can add to our homes come in all shapes and sizes.

But one thing they all have in common? They help improve the lives of our customers.

Thanks to a vital boost in funding from the UK Government’s Social Housing Decarbonisation fund, we are set to improve the efficiency of more of our homes, by investing close to £2.5million in a range of energy saving measures over the next 14 months.

Karbon customer Kerry is one of many reaping the benefits of a warmer home after having external wall installation (EWI) fitted to her terrace home on Adderlane Road in Prudhoe.

New Homes

We’re committed to improving the energy performance of our new homes as well. We’ll be designing and building them using modern methods of construction (MMC) from timber framed houses through to modular builds – these are homes that are built in a factory under strict supervision and tight controls and then transported to site.

Zoe Hawthorne, our Assistant Director in Development Delivery said:

“By using MMC we are able to construct our new homes to a higher specification meaning we won’t have to revisit these properties to upgrade them further down the line as they are made to meet future standards.”

We are also working to ensure we can support a variety of living species in the environment, including plants, animals, bacteria and fungi. We can do this by the planting of shrubs trees, doing ecology surveys to assess the environmental impact our developments will have and managing flood risks and any risk of overheating.

Stay tuned throughout #NetZeroWeek to find out more about our response to climate change.
