North Tyneside charity receive vital refurbishment through social value programme

North Tyneside based Charity Support and Grow North East has benefitted from major building improvements to its centre in Shiremoor, thanks to a partnership with Karbon Homes.

Through the local housing association’s Unlocking Social Value programme, which matches the social value commitments of Karbon’s contractors and suppliers with organisations across the region, Support and Grow has been able to transform its centre, with a plethora of works costing around £4,500.

Louise Jones, CEO and founder of Support and Grow, said: 'We are a small community led charity built on the hard work and commitment of local volunteers.  We rely on the support and generosity of local people and local businesses.  We are so grateful for all of the support given by Karbon Homes.  This makes a real difference to the lives of vulnerable people, experiencing hardship and deprivation.  We could not do what we do without this support'

Support and Grow North East aims to alleviate poverty, health inequalities and social isolation, working with communities across North Tyneside and Northumberland. It supports people facing difficult circumstances and offers activities to bring the community together.

The charity took over the Bertram Grange Community Centre in Shiremoor in August 2022 to enable them to deliver support at the heart of the community.

However, the centre needed vital but costly refurbishment works, and thanks to its partnership with Karbon, the charity has received support from Karbon contractors, who have joined together to help ensure the building is a safe and welcoming environment for its users.

Jess Alexander, Social Value Coordinator at Karbon Homes, said: “Providing strong foundations is what we do at Karbon, so naturally we wanted to help Support and Grow North East create an environment that best suited their needs.

“Our Unlocking Social Value programme means we can collaborate with organisations we already work so well with, to create a result that will positively impact communities throughout North Tyneside and beyond.”

“We also collaborated throughout Karbon, with Technical Surveyor Stephen Stewart,  being a driving force behind a lot of the work that has been carried out at Support and Grow”.

Improvement works included upgrading and improving the centre’s electrics and lighting and bringing a disused room back into use to hold one to one and small family appointments.

Ogilvie Fire Projection lead the renovation of the room, re-boarding and plastering the walls and installing shelves. Fortify Electrical provided the electrical work and materials, fitting new LED lights throughout the centre and installing additional sockets in the office and kitchen.

Mitie Property Services were then approached to provide further work to paint the newly refurbished back room and corridor area, and have also carried out some joinery works.

Throughout the regeneration project items were donated by North Shields based charity Mindstars. The two charities have begun a partnership, creating new resources to work towards alleviating poverty in North Shields.

Bruce Ogilvie, CEO of Ogilvie Fire Protection, said: "Ogilvie is committed to supporting social mobility in the communities we work in, and our donation to Support and Grow North East is for a project that will deliver benefits to the wider community for future generations"

This project continues the support Support and Grow North East has received from Karbon. The two organisations have developed a longstanding relationship, delivering a number of valuable projects to support Karbon residents and the wider community. The charity received a £3020 grant from Karbon’s Community Investment Fund for its “Grow and Give Back” project, to support the set up and ongoing running of their community allotment space for growing vegetables.
