North Yorkshire MP welcomes development of affordable homes in Thirsk

Our development of 47 energy efficient, affordable homes on Saxty Way in Thirsk, has been welcomed by local MP for bringing much-needed affordable homes to the area.

Kevin Hollinrake MP, visited the new development with our Chief Executive Paul Fiddaman and colleagues from our Development Team, viewing both the first phase of homes which welcomed their residents at the end of 2023, and a selection which are close to completion.

Also accompanied by our main contractor T Manners & Sons, the Thirsk and Malton MP was impressed by the energy efficiency of the new builds, which all achieve an energy performance certificate rating A, boast solar PV panels and are powered by air source heat pump systems.

Kevin Hollinrake MP, said: “This new Karbon Homes housing development is a fantastic demonstration of how to utilise innovative techniques. It not only provides housing for people in Sowerby, it's creating new habitats for wildlife and boosting our region’s biodiversity. I look forward to seeing the progress of the project.”

The Saxty Way development consists of a mix of two bed bungalows, one bed flats, and two and three bed family houses. Of the homes, 22 will be available for affordable rent and 25 for a mix of Rent to Buy and shared ownership, providing local people with the opportunity to get a foot on the property ladder.

Paul Fiddaman, Chief Executive of Karbon Homes who hosted the visit, said: “We have a strong track record of delivering good quality, affordable homes across Yorkshire and as we continue to expand our development programme, it’s fantastic to receive such positive feedback on the new homes we’re delivering.

“Bringing more affordable housing developments to fruition across the county is key in addressing Yorkshire housing affordability issues and ensuring local people have access to good quality housing, either for rent or for affordable home ownership.

“As well as ensuring our homes are highly energy efficient and affordable for residents to run, we’re also committed to making communities sustainable for future generations, building homes that produce less carbon and have less impact on the environment.”

The development has been delivered with funding from Homes England, through our strategic partnership with the government’s housing delivery agency. The strategic partnership has provided us with funding to deliver 2,200 new affordable homes across the North East and Yorkshire by 2026.

Saxty Way is one of two developments we have in the Thirsk area. Just a mile away in the village of Sowerby, we're well underway on a second scheme, off Back Lane, delivering a further 64 new two, three and four-bed affordable homes.

On completion, the homes on both sites will be managed by our subsidiary 54North Homes, which owns and manages around 4,000 homes across Yorkshire.
