Residents of Sacriston have welcomed their beloved colliery winding wheel to its new home on the village Front Street, thanks to the help of Karbon.
Colleagues from our Development Delivery Team joined representatives from the Durham Miners Association and the Sacriston Parish Council to inaugurate the monument, which now sites pride of place outside the busy Fulforth Centre.
The wheel previously stood on the corner of the junction of Durham Road and Plawsworth Road in the village, where we've recently started developing 25 new affordable homes.
Our team wanted to ensure the wheel was out of harm's way as construction started on site, so worked closely with the parish council to identify a suitable spot to rehome it.
Sara Armstrong, Development Contracts Officer for Karbon Homes said: “It’s fantastic to see the winding wheel at its new home. These monuments are a really special part of the communities in County Durham, so it was imperative to Karbon that we rehomed the wheel somewhere where it stood pride of place.”
Hugh Dixon, Chair of Sacriston Parish Council, added: “The wheel looks fantastic and the parish council are really grateful to both Karbon Homes and Able Construction who have made sure the wheel was moved safely. Now settled at its new home on Front Street, it will continue to mark our rich mining heritage for many more years to come.”
The wheel's relocation was made possible thanks to help from our construction partner, Able Construction, who undertook the work to move the wheel to its new home.
Peter Fowle, Director of Able Construction said: “We were aware of how important and meaningful the pit wheel was to the local community and a great deal of careful planning and consideration had to be made before it could be moved to its new home. We were extremely pleased when it was finally lifted into place, it looks right at home in its new location.”
