Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people, and to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively.
To mark Safer Internet Day, Hayley Woodhouse, one of our Digital Coaches, has provided some top tips for how you can stay safe while online.
- Keep it secret, keep it safe - keep your passwords secure and don’t share them with others. It’s best to avoid passwords that contain personal information or can be easily guessed.
- Use PayPal when shopping online for added peace of mind for purchases. This online payment system offers strong and secure purchase protection programme for buyers, helping to protect you against theft and fraud.
- Check those selfies - when posting pictures on social media, be mindful of your background – does it show personal details such as house numbers, car registrations or anything that shows potential fraudsters personal information about yourself?
- Be wary of Phishing emails - these fraudulent messages are designed to trick you into revealing sensitive information. Do you know the sender? Any emails asking for personal information, login details, bank details or passwords should be treated with caution. Emails with links to other websites should also be accessed with caution.
- There’s no such thing as a free lunch - if it seems to good to be true then it probably is. Think before you click and always read the terms and conditions before subscribing or buying anything which seems suspicious.
