This October we’re celebrating ten years of Silver Talk, our telephone befriending service.
As part of our celebrations, we took our volunteers to Beamish, the living museum of the North, to thank them for all the support they've given us.
The volunteers took a tram over to the 1900s town where the team from Beamish told them about all the work they do in the community and with people with dementia.
They also got to experience the excitement and community spirit of the new 1950s town and see some of the new attractions, including the Welfare Hall before enjoying a buffet lunch with a special Silver Talk cake in the Tea Room.
Our Community Investment Manager Paul Moralee wanted to give something back to the volunteers:
"We really wanted to say thank you to the volunteers for the ten years of hard work they've given us. We chose Beamish because of who it is and where it is. We feel it's a fantastic organisation that does fantastic work, and we really want to showcase that to our volunteers."
Our Assistant Director of Community and Customer Engagement, Phil Pollard has high praise for the Silver Talk service:
"Silver Talk's a really important service that we offer, because it aims to tackle social isolation. It reaches out to those customers who can be quite lonely, who live alone and they don't hear from people very often. So Silver Talk provides an opportunity for them to have conversations with people to really kind of help them not feel alone."
Silver Talk Coordinator, Christine Fletcher was full of praise for the Beamish experience:
"Everybody who's come today has felt like a VIP. We were met at the door by the lovely staff of Beamish Museum. We're had our own private bus to bring us to the 1900s village and a lovely talk about the history of Beamish and what it's all about."
