Dan Morrison was brutally attacked by kids on Newcastle's Town Moor in 2008, leaving him in a coma and subsequently unable to work for years.
Eager to get back into employment but still living with memory problems and epilepsy, Dan was recently supported back into his desired field of work by Karbon's Foundation for Life team.
Having qualified as an electrician over 17years ago Dan was unfortunately told after his attack he could no longer drive, and therefore advised it’s unlikely an electrical firm would hire him.
Keen to give back to the local hospital he received life-saving support from during his recovery, Dan volunteered and helped people with brain injuries.
However, Dan was determined to get back into his much-loved, original profession as an electrician: “I’d trained for three years and still felt competent.” He thanks Karbon's employment advisor, Claire Lindsay, for making this a reality.
Claire explained: "Dan was referred to me by Newcastle Council after struggling to obtain work, as a result of his life-changing injuries.
"As part of Dan's journey back to work, I connected him with his new employer and arranged access to work for his transport needs. We covered the funding for his Level 3 Electrician's refresher qualification and site pass worth £225. I also accompanied Dan to his interview due to travel restrictions and to help him feel less anxious."
Dan had no confidence anyone would hire him so was extremely grateful for the life-changing support he received from Karbon: "Claire listened and took on board everything I said and within 17days of our first meeting she helped sort my refresher qualification and get me back into employment.
As a result of getting back to work, Dan's health has improved and he experiences less seizures during the working day. He puts that down to feeling positively stimulated at work and enjoying the prospect of building his career as an electrician once again.
Dan is just one of many who has benefitted from Karbon's Foundations for Life team, which provides a range of employment and financial support. Karbon also offers follow-up support for up to six months once customers have started work, to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their new role.
