Now that the longer winter nights have arrived, Community Safety Manager, Laurie Edmundson, shares her top tips to help you stay as safe as possible, both in your home and when you’re out and about.
Keeping your home safe
The darker nights can provide the perfect cover for break-ins, but there are ways for you to keep your home secure:
Lock up. Make sure you keep your front and back doors locked at all times, as well as any garages, sheds and outbuildings. Don’t leave a spare key outside your house as a lot of burglars know the usual hiding places.
Let there be light. Get some solar outdoor lighting to make your door more visible from the street and put off any unwelcome guests from approaching your doorstep.
Out of sight. Make sure your keys and valuables are not out on display or in reach of letterboxes, windows and cat flaps.
Neighbourhood Watch. Starting up a Neighbourhood Watch in your area can be a great way to create safer neighbourhoods and reduce crime. To find out how to start a Neighbourhood Watch, visit www.ourwatch.org.uk
Keeping yourself safe
Plan before you go out. Make sure you know where you’re going, how you’ll get there and get back. It’s always good to make sure a friend or relative will know where you’re going as well, and you can always give them a quick text or ring to let them know you got there and back safely.
Don’t text and walk. While we all are probably guilty of using our phones too much, it’s best to try and stay off it when you’re out and about. If you’re texting or listening to music while you walk it can distract you from your surroundings. It’s best to not wear your headphones and keep your phone and other valuables such as your keys and purse/wallet close, safe and out of sight.
Raise the alarm. If you regularly walk home in the dark, get a personal attack alarm – they are widely available, inexpensive and can be very effective.
Are you experiencing noise nuisance?
Try the Noise App – you can download it on your phone and use it to record incidents of noise nuisance as they happen.
The app recordings can be sent directly to us, to help us quickly establish if there is a problem and to investigate.
