Residents at Karbon Homes’ Sheltered Housing schemes across Northumberland are fighting fit this autumn thanks to a new wellbeing and fitness project from Age UK Northumberland and the NHS.
The How Fit project provides residents with an easy-to-follow exercise programme which helps to reduce the number of falls and improve balance, coordination, strength, mobility and cardiovascular health.
The exercise programme has been designed by the NHS and is suitable for older people. Schemes are provided with a “Small Steps to Felling Good” booklet which features exercises for all levels, starting from chair-based exercises and progressing from there.
The sessions are delivered by a Health and Wellbeing Officer from Age UK Northumberland and run for an hour each week for a total of 12 weeks.
Nicky Hepplewhite, one of our Retirement Living Scheme Coordinators said:
“The project has gone down really well with our residents. It’s a great way for them to stay happy and healthy and they’re really enjoying getting fit together.
“It doesn't matter how old you are or your ability, the classes can work for anyone - from June, who at 90 is the eldest person in the class, to Elsie who is 86 and has mobility problems - they both just do the exercises they can manage and join in as much as possible.
"As you get older it can be harder to find ways to keep active, especially as we get into the winter months, so it’s really beneficial to have exercise programmes like this that can be performed anywhere and by anyone no matter what age you are. ”
