There’s no time like the present for a New Start

Karbon customer Paul Hetherington from Stanley had been out of work for 20 years. But then he found out about our employment programme New Start…

“I’m a single dad and have been looking after my kids for a long time. I applied for jobs in the past, but the hours didn’t work for me. Many were full time, and I would have struggled to fit them in with my childcare needs.

“Now that most of my kids have grown up, I had a bit more flexibility so I decided to start looking for a job again.

“I heard about New Start through the local Job Centre and thought ‘there’s no time like the present’.

“Graeme from the New Start team really helped me with the interviews and how to present myself. It made it much easier for me to relax and just be myself.”

Paul, who is 48 years old, was able to get a job as a Maintenance Assistant at Beamish Museum.

“I’ve always liked Beamish and to work there is an honour.

“Before I stopped working I used to make car parts and I’ve also got a lot of experience doing maintenance in the house so the job was right up my street.

“I feel brilliant. It’s been so long since I’ve been in work and I’ve really missed it.”

Jonathan Kindleysides, Head of Industry at Beamish, has been impressed with the New Start experience:

“It has been a great experience working with Karbon Homes to provide two placement opportunities, within the Maintenance Team. Our two placements showed great enthusiasm throughout the interview process and have gone on to fit in seamlessly with the existing team.

“The care and dedication shown, to all the candidates, by the Karbon team shines through. We look forward to seeing our placements continue to flourish during their placements."

New Start gives you the opportunity to get real-life work experience with a real wage and individual support to help you take your first step on your career ladder.

Each role will last 5 months and will be up to 30 hours per week. Plus, there’s no experience necessary.

We recently welcomed 8 New Starters at an onboarding event at our Stanley Skills Hub. New Start Programme Coordinator, Michelle Fortune is thrilled to see so many people benefitting from the scheme.

“It’s been fantastic to see such a wide range of people from different backgrounds find work through New Start.

“Whether you’re looking for your first job, wanting a change in your career or, like Paul, have been out of work for a while and want to get back into it, New Start can help. We help unlock your potential, addressing your barriers to employment and support you so you can find a great new career.”

There are more New Start career opportunities going live very soon. For more information or to apply, head over to www.new-start.co.uk.
