Thanks to a partnership between Karbon, and Straightline, one of Karbon’s planned maintenance contractors, Mindstars’ offices on West Percy Street in North Shields, have benefitted from new external and interior doors, freshened up paintwork and the fitting of two new kitchens, creating a warmer space for colleagues and visitors to enjoy.
The project came as a result of Karbon Homes’ Unlocking Social Value programme, which matches the social value commitments of Karbon’s contractors and suppliers with organisations across the region.
And thanks to Stephen Stewart, Technical Surveyor at Karbon Homes, the project also utilise surplus kitchen components from one of Karbon’s depots, helping to avoid good materials going to waste.
Marisa May, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Mindstars said: “Raising funds for refurbishment has always been a problem for us, so we carried out any works ourselves.
“We dreamt of having a space more welcoming and fit for purpose for the many families we support, and this dream has become a reality thanks to Karbon Homes and Straightline Construction!
“We now have two brand new fitted kitchens and storage. We also have two entrances, the doors to these were replaced with one new amazing front door which has made a big difference to our visitors. Our hub was also fully repainted, including the external windows, brightening the space up.
“We are beyond thankful for their support and are thrilled with our new Hub, as are the many families who come to us.”
Mindstars supports the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people, together with their parents and guardians, delivering a full family approach. The charity offers a range of vital wellbeing activities, support, and advice, to remove the barriers that poor mental health brings.
Nathan Lowes, Investment Team Manager at Karbon Homes said: “The work Mindstars carries out with young people and their families in North Tyneside Community is incredibly important, and I’m pleased we’ve been able to help them get their newly expanded premises looking its best.
“Supporting our communities is a big part of what we do at Karbon. We’re proud to work with contractors who share similar values and grateful to them for the social value contributions they make that help us deliver work like this. Straightline really did go above and beyond their social value commitments when with this project.”
Kevin Bucas, Operations Director at Straightline, said: “We are delighted to help wherever we can from offering our services to raising money for foodbanks and charities.
“Being able to work with Mindstars and help the fantastic work they do has been great, and we will continue to support similar initiatives moving forward.”
This project continues the support Mindstars has received from Karbon. The two organisations have developed a longstanding relationship, delivering a number of valuable projects to support Karbon residents and the wider community.
Through its community investment fund, Karbon has also pledged £1000 to support the charities fundraising campaign to produce a documentary on the effect of mental health on young people.
The documentary, “The Ripple Effect”, directed by 17-year-old media studies student Ellen Bridget, aims to highlight the ripple effects of mental health on young people in North Tyneside and those working to tackle these issues.
If the charity achieves its £9201 target, it will be able to both produce and promote the documentary, along with being a fantastic opportunity to highlight the charities work carried out in North Tyneside and nurturing local talent.
